词组 said
释义 said
All commentators agree that use of said as an adjective synonymous with aforementioned is appropriate only in legal and business contexts, and it is certainly true that it now appears far more commonly in those contexts than in any other:
... fixed sinking fund requirements and final maturity amount on the said bonds —Annual Report, Armco Steel Corp., 1970
... an order rescinding the supplemental agreement referred to in said Note —Annual Report, R. J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., 1970
Said has been favored in legal writing for centuries, but its use in general contexts was also unremarkable once:
The said article is so very mild and sentimental — Lord Byron, letter, 22 Aug. 1813
... attending them to their carriage after the said dinner visit —Jane Austen, Mansfield Park, 1814
And so you don't agree with my view as to said photographer? —Lewis Carroll, letter, 1 Apr. 1887
Such usage still occurs, but the legalistic connotations of said have long been so familiar that those who employ it in other contexts typically do so for deliberate effect, often humorous:
This petition sheweth that the best way of proving clearly that a man is not dead is by setting forth his manner of life, and, first, that he, the said W. Hazlitt, has regularly for the last month rang the bell at eleven at night —William Hazlitt, letter, 11 Jan. 1808
He was also an extremely vain man who would keep said mustache at the proper rakish tilt with the aid of paper clips —Richard Freedman, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 28 Mar. 1976
