词组 famed
释义 famed
Famed has been aspersed by some commentators (Bernstein 1965, Flesch 1964, Copperud 1964, Fennell 1980, Watt 1967, Ebbitt & Ebbitt 1982) as journalese; Zinsser 1976 associates it with Time magazine. But the OED tells a different story: the first journalist listed there is Shakespeare. The OED also has examples from Sir Richard Steele, George Washington, Lord Byron, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Webster's Second has a quotation from Milton. With these important literary sources, it is no wonder that dictionaries recognize famed as standard. Famous may be more often used, but that does not mean everyone must use famous.
And when you find him evenly deriv'd From his most fam'd of famous ancestors, Edward the Third ...—Shakespeare, Henry V, 1600
Like those Hesperian gardens, famed of old —John Milton, Paradise Lost, 1667
In present-day use famed is both a predicate adjective, often with for, and an attributive adjective.
Denver, once famed for its clear mountain air, is now subject to smog —Barry Commoner, Columbia Forum, Spring 1968
... Harold's famed Reno gambling casino —Bennett Cerf, Saturday Rev., 22 May 1954
Famed is perfectly standard, even if it has been used by Time:
... Ruskin's famed friend, Painter Sir John Millais — Time, 29 Dec. 1947
