词组 false comparison
释义 false comparison
False comparison is a name used by a few commentators (such as Johnson 1982, Copperud 1970, 1980) for a writer's careless omission of a word or two that would make a comparison perfectly clear and logical—"carrying ellipsis too far," Copperud calls it. Handbooks sometimes treat it as a variety of illogical comparison or incomplete comparison. This is a rather insignificant mistake in terms of its hindrance of communication, because readers tend to go right past such false comparisons without even noticing them. Here are a couple of examples of the fault from a writer of impeccable credentials, with the probable missing words supplied in brackets:
... in many counties Negroes outnumber whites in a ratio resembling [that in] parts of Alabama and Mississippi —William Styron, This Quiet Dust and Other Writings, 1982
... that fine and funny book, in which horror and laughter are commingled like [in] the beginning of a scream —William Styron, This Quiet Dust and Other Writings, 1982
From these and the examples in Johnson and Copperud it appears that in is often the word or one of the words omitted in false comparison. There are, however, others (see any 3, as good or better than). We think that you can see from the examples how easily the construction slips by. But even if readers are not likely to be often puzzled by false comparisons, we think it is a good idea for you to try to avoid them.
