词组 | sake |
释义 | sake Fowler 1926 and Evans 1957 both regard the apostrophe as optional in for goodness' sake, for conscience' sake, and similar expressions in which the word preceding sake ends in an s or z sound. They both consider it incorrect to add an apostrophe plus -s. Our evidence indicates that the apostrophe is rarely omitted in such expressions, and that the apostrophe plus -s is only avoided when the \\\\s\\\\ sound is never added in speech, as when the expression is a fixed idiom (as for goodness' sake and for conscience' sake are), or when the word in question is multisyllabic (as in for convenience' sake) so that pronouncing the -s would be especially awkward. When the word is short and no fixed idiom is involved, the -s is likely to be pronounced and the apostrophe plus -s is likely to be written: for peace's sake, for the human race's sake. |
