词组 sanatorium, sanitarium
释义 sanatorium, sanitarium
People used to write letters to newspapers—and to dictionary editors—about these two words, but the small controversy that once existed concerning their use has now died out. The argument favoring a distinction between them ran more or less as follows: sanatorium is derived from the Latin verb sanare, meaning "to restore to health," and properly refers to an establishment set up for the treatment of disease or for the care of invalids; sanitarium, on the other hand, is derived from the Latin noun sanitas, meaning "health," and properly refers to an establishment set up for the preservation rather than the restoration of health—a health resort, in other words. The problem for those who favored this tidy etymological distinction was that it bore no relation to actual English usage. As is now generally conceded, sanatorium and sanitarium are synonymous words, used interchangeably. The only distinctions that can be made on the basis of the evidence in our files are that sanatorium is somewhat more likely to be used when the establishment referred to is specifically for the treatment of tuberculosis, and that sanitarium—possibly because of association with sanity—is somewhat more likely when the establishment is for the treatment of mental and emotional disorders.
