词组 belie
释义 belie
Follett 1966 worries that "this useful word" is "being distorted" into its opposite meaning—being used in the general sense of "to give evidence of." He produces only one example of distortion, however, and that from someone identified only as a delegate to the United Nations. We do not even know if we are dealing with a native speaker of English. A correspondent of William Safire, in Safire 1982, produced two more examples, one from an automobile advertisement, and another from a newspaper story which read "Slight twitches in his eyes and hands belied his nervousness." This writer apparently wrote belie while thinking betray.
Our files contain no evidence of this reported use and we thus assume that it is not very widespread. This is a more typical use of belie:
... he remained the master of a great feudal estate whose amenities and luxuries, though modest, belied his primitivist credo —Edwin M. Yoder, Jr., Harper's, March 1971
