词组 | stage |
释义 | stage Stage is an old verb, but until the 20th century it was primarily a theatrical one, with such meanings as "to represent on the stage" and "to produce (as a play) on a stage." It has now developed several extended uses, and these have been occasionally criticized since at least the 1920s: • One may perhaps express a pious wish that some check might be imposed upon the journalistic use of the verb stage.... Every newspaper reader must have noticed the frequency with which the word is now used to describe every sort of occurrence, from a street row to a wedding —George B. Ives, Text, Type, and Style, 1921 The sporadic criticism has had no apparent effect on the word's popularity. • ... young separatists stage a sit-down to draw public attention to their demands —Saturday Evening Post, 10 Oct. 1964 • ... a group of P.L.C. supporters staged a demonstration in front of Gallagher's office —David Boroff, N.Y. Times Mag, 28 Mar. 1965 • ... when he staged his most recent bid for re-election —Current Biography, December 1967 • ... before the Catawba could stage a comeback — Brian McGinty, Early American Life, February 1980 |
