词组 | remediable, remedial |
释义 | remediable, remedial Several commentators distinguish between these words, but only two of them—Follett 1966 and Copperud 1970, 1980—explicitly state that remediable and remedial are ever confused. Follett cites an instance in which remedial, which means "serving or intended as a remedy," is used in place of remediable, which means "capable of being remedied." Our files contain no other examples of such misuse. The OED shows that the original meaning of remediable was, in fact, "remedial," but the most recent evidence of remediable in this obsolete sense is from 1596. What we conclude from all of this is that these two words are rarely confused. Here are a few examples of typical current use: • He noted the various remedial proposals that have been made —Center Mag., November 1969 • ... he had begun this remedial reading with the firmest male prejudice of them all —Norman Mailer, Harper's, March 1971 • Happily, my problem was remediable —Carll Tucker, Saturday Rev., 18 Mar. 1978 • ... at least partly remediable social wrongs —Irving Howe, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 18 Apr. 1982 |
