词组 jurist
释义 jurist
The use of jurist as a synonym for judge is deprecated by several commentators, who point out that jurist has the general sense "one who is versed in the law" and is therefore not strictly limited in application to judges. It should be noted, however, that jurist is now relatively rare in American English except in referring to a judge (the British use it differently, to denote a legal scholar or writer). It does not, as a rule, stand alone in place of judge as a pure synonym; a judge asked what he or she does for a living would be unlikely to reply, "I'm a jurist." It typically serves instead as a respectful term for a person whose status as a judge is already known:
Mr. Murphy went to Judge Kaufman in chambers and threw the problem in the jurist's lap —A. J. Liebling, New Yorker, 23 July 1949
Such usage is not incompatible with the general sense of jurist.
