词组 | -ic, -ical |
释义 | -ic, -ical English contains a considerable number of adjective pairs ending in -ic and -ical: for instance, biologic, biological; electric, electrical; ironic, ironical; mythic, mythical. Some of these pairs are essentially interchangeable while others are differentiated in use. Sometimes the -ical variant will have a wider or more transferred semantic range than its counterpart in -ic— and sometimes not. A number of these pairs have been treated in usage books, and you'll find some of them here: see classic, classical; economic, economical; historic, historical. If you are uncertain which of a given pair of these adjectives to use, you had better rely on a good dictionary, such as Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. A good dictionary will show you which senses belong to which variants if they are indeed differentiated in use. Sometimes there is less differentiation than usage writers would like there to be. |
