词组 trustee, trusty
释义 trustee, trusty
Evans 1957 and Copperud 1964 observe the distinction between these nouns: trustee denotes someone to whom property is legally committed in trust (or, more broadly, someone who has been entrusted with something); trusty denotes a prisoner who is considered trustworthy and is given special privileges. This distinction is real and is observed by most writers, but trustee does turn up from time to time in the "trustworthy prisoner" sense:
Judson Kaines had been a trustee, a favorite of the warden's —James Clark Moloney, Psychiatry, February 1945
"Sorry, bud," the trustee grinned relishingly
"But we don't issue no campaign hats here " —James Jones, From Here to Eternity, 1951
The city government used trustee convicts from State Prison Camp 22 —N. Y. Times, 28 Aug. 1967
This use of trustee is logical and consistent with the normal use of the suffix -ee to mean "a recipient or beneficiary," but it is not common, and people who pride themselves on their spelling will undoubtedly call it an error. We recommend that you use trusty instead.
Note that the noun trusty is pronounced both \\\\'trǝs-tē\\\\ and \\\\,trǝs-'tē\\\\. The pronunciation with the primary stress on the second syllable is analogous to the trustee spelling, but it occurs much more commonly than the spelling and, so far as we know, has never been criticized.
