词组 | violoncello |
释义 | violoncello It is logical to suppose that the beginning of this word is spelled like violin, and in fact the spelling violincello has turned up in respectable surroundings on occasion: • Mr. Skimpole could play on the piano and the violincello —Charles Dickens, Bleak House, 1852 (OED) Nevertheless, the original and accepted spelling is violoncello. The reason for the difference is that violin is derived from violino, "little viola," while violoncello is derived from violone, "big viola." You can commit that distinction to memory if you like, or you can do what most people do (as Copperud 1970, 1980 points out) and just use cello instead. |
