词组 | participle |
释义 | participle 1. See dangling modifiers; possessive with gerund. 2. Participles as adjectives. Both past and present participles can be used much like adjectives. A usage issue concerning the propriety of using very as a premodifier before a past participle in predicative position ("I am very tired") sprang up in the second half of the 19th century and has not yet entirely died down. The construction of very plus past participle has been in use since 1641, according to the OED. The thrust of the argument is that very cannot modify a verb and therefore should not modify its past participle; very much is prescribed. That the basis of the argument is illogical is pointed up by the omission of the present participle from the discussion, a defect that is, shall we say, very disappointing. This issue is treated more fully at very 1. |
