词组 buy
释义 buy
 1. Noun. Copperud 1970 notes that some commentators quibble over the sense of buy that means "bargain"; in addition to this group, Harper 1985 also views it askance. Copperud opines that the use must be well on the way to acceptance. It should be, since it has been in use since 1879. Here are some examples:
It's not only the OTCs that are buys —Robert S. Kane, Saturday Rev., 20 Mar. 1976
... dollar for dollar, penny for penny, the very best buy on the market today —Sam Aaron & Clifton Fadiman, Saturday Rev., December 1978
... to convince investors that Denny's success ... makes its stock a good buy —Earl C. Gottschalk, Jr., Wall Street Jour., 5 Jan. 1981
Among the great buys ... is the so-called kitchen Ming —Geri Trotta, Gourmet, December 1982
 2. Verb. The sense of the verb meaning "accept, believe" is called slang by Copperud 1970 and Harper 1985. That label is out of date; the sense is now standard:
Professor Handlin is too knowledgeable a historian of the political and social currents in the nation to buy that line of reasoning —Herbert Mitgang, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 26 Oct. 1980
The Oxford English Dictionary doesn't buy the Scandinavian connection, though —Thomas H. Middleton, Saturday Rev., March 1981
One sympathizes with the effort, even if one doesn't buy his overall thesis —James R. Mellow, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 1 Nov. 1982
... a group of young House activists who don't buy the old ways of doing business —Elizabeth Drew, New Yorker, 10 Sept. 1984
But the President soon made it clear that he didn't buy the notion that delaying the tax cut had become unavoidable —David A. Stockman, Newsweek, 28 Apr. 1986
