词组 | peak, peek, pique |
释义 | peak, peek, pique These homophones have a way of being muddled by nodding writers. Most of the examples we have seen involve the substitution of peak for one of the other two. James J. Kilpatrick both in his 1984 book and later newspaper columns has caught a number of these, including "a peak at the machines" where peek was wanted, and "peaked our curiosity" where piqued was wanted. We have a few too: • ... she could peak into the bedroom —N. Y. Times, 2 Sept. 1983 (peek) • ... peaking students' desire to learn —an elementary-school principal, 16 May 1983 (piquing) A writer needs to keep the meaning in mind and match it to the correct spelling. |
