词组 wont
释义 wont
As an adjective, wont means "accustomed" or "inclined." It occurs only as a predicate adjective, and it is almost always followed by an infinitive:
... the appearance of one before whom all her doubts were wont to be laid —Jane Austen, Mansfield Park, 1814
... presumably they take it seriously, as children are wont to do —Thomas H. Middleton, Saturday Rev., 19 Mar. 1977
... where the candidates, their managers, and various ranking journalists are wont to gather —Hunter S. Thompson, Rolling Stone, 16 Mar. 1972
As a noun meaning "habitual way of doing," wont occurs most often in phrases beginning "as is..." or "as was ...":
... saying as is his wont that the literary scholars don't know anything anyway —Louis Marder, CEA Critic, May 1971
... but as was his wont, he stated his opinion in bold and provocative language —George Clark Sellery, The Renaissance, 1950
 2. Confusion of wont with won't has been warned against on occasion, but we have no evidence that such confusion has ever actually occurred, even though authors like William Faulkner and George Bernard Shaw may choose to omit the apostrophe. See won't
