词组 | point of view |
释义 | point of view Those commentators who bother with this term at all discuss varying aspects of it. For its relation to several words closely akin in meaning, see standpoint and viewpoint. Gowers in Fowler 1965 thinks point of view is used in what he calls "clumsy periphrasis"; the examples he gives involve "from the point of view of a living wage" and "from the point of view of cleaning." Uses such as these that link point of view with something nonhuman seem to be the concern also of Nickles 1974 and Phythian 1979. But these constructions do not seem to be especially frequent. We find such uses as "from a maintenance point of view" and "from a security point of view" from time to time in trade publications. We do not find many similar constructions in publications of more general interest, although we do have this stunner: • The coffee bars and restaurants have also impressed me from a design, decor, tariff and standard of food point of view —Carole Payne, Thursday (Auckland, N.Z.), 8 May 1975 But there seems little point in condemning uses like the following one: • ... not so much from the point of view of salary — K. M. Elisabeth Murray, Caught in the Web of Words, 1977 The rest of the criticism is on other grounds. Evans 1957 and Shaw 1975, 1987 seem to think point of view overused. Evans also does not like point of view preceded by an adjective because an adverb will say the same thing more briefly. Evans's judgment would probably put these examples under the ban: • ... though one may frown on the practice from the critical point of view —Simon 1980 • From an educational point of view, the four other institutions will backstop Hampshire's efforts —Calvin H. Plimpton, Amherst College Bulletin, November 1967 It is hard to see much wrong with uses like these. Simon could even claim with justice that the adverb would not be clear in his context. This is another case where what needs to be avoided is not the construction but overre-liance on it. |
