【问】 《新英汉辞典》将The project requires no fewer than a thousand workers.译为“这项工程

需要的工人不下一千人”。《远东英汉大辞典》则将no fewer than译为“不下于”、“约有”。张道真《现代英语用法词典》(P.1511)将no fewer than译为“至少有”。不知这些译法是否表达了no fewer than的真正含义?

【答】 在汉语里，“不下”、“不下于”、“至少”具有“不低于”，但有可能“高于”的意思，也就是说，它是用来表示概略数目的。然而英语里的no fewer than(如同no less than一样)决不用于表示概略数目，而用于表示精确数目，再加上说话人“言其多”的口气，如同no more than表达“言其少”的口气一样。no fewer than five people相当于as many as five people。

1. No fewer than 50 people competed. (MED)

参加竞赛的有50人之多。

2. There were no fewer than 500 people present. (Palmer)

出席者多达500人。

现在用no less than来代替no fewer than的倾向已为大家所接受，其意义和语气是相同的。

No less than fifty people were killed in the accident. (CGEL§5. 24)

在这次事故中死亡者多达50人。
