【答】 并列连词but单独使用时作“但是”、“然而”解，但是跟not连用时，则作“而是”解。“not... but”一般可以译为“不是……而是”，即否定前者，肯定后者。例如：

1. It is not water，but alcohol.

这不是水，而是酒精。

2. He refuses to consider sufficiently the wants of the customer，who must buy，not thething he desires but the thing the English gentleman wants to sell.
