【问】 As students of science you are probably sometimes puzzled by the terms ‘pure’ and 'ap-plied' science.

这里的‘pure’and‘applied’science显然是指两件事(复数)，为什么science不用复数呢?

【答】 当science表示“反映自然、社会、思维等客观规律的知识体系”时，是不可数名词。而不可数名词即使表示复数概念，也只能采用单数形式。这是意义和形式之间的矛盾，是无法克服的。

1. Indian and Chinese tea smell totally different from each other. (CGEL)(这里的tea在形式上是单数，但在概念上却是复数。)

印度茶与中国茶味道完全不一样。

2. Red and white cabbage are useful ingredients for a salad. (CGEL)(cabbage在这里是指两种甘蓝，但仍用单数。参见cabbage。)

红甘蓝和白甘蓝是做色拉很有用的材料。

但是，当science指具体的科学分支(即抽象名词部分化)时，就是可数名词了：the natu-ral sciences，social sciences。
