a(an)的位置
 【问】 不定冠词a(an)是否永远位于名词短语的最前端,如a particularly able person?
 【答】 一般说来,不定冠词a(an)应当放在名词短语的最前端。但是,有几种例外的情况。
 第一,当名词短语中含有so,as,too,how这样的词时,不定冠词a(an)就必须改变位置:
 (so,as,too,how)+形容词+a(an)+名词(强制性的语序)
 A. so beautiful a child
 1. I've never seen so beautiful a child. (LDCE)
 我从来没见过这么漂亮的孩子。
 2. He's never again written so good a book as his first one. (LDCE)
 他再也没写过象他第一部书那样好的书。
 B. as pleasant a day as
 1. It was as pleasant a day as I have ever spent. (PEU)
 这是我度过的最愉快的一天。
 2. It is as big a park as we have never seen before.
 这是我以前从未见过的大公园。
 3. He's not as clever a man as I thought. (CGEL)
 他并不像我想像的那样聪明。
 C. too kind a girl
 1. She is too kind a girl to refuse. (PEU)
 她是个好心肠的姑娘,不会拒绝的。
 2. It was too nice a day to stay inside. (PEU)
 那天天气太好了,无论如何也不能呆在屋里。
 3. It isn't too heavy a burden for the industry to bear.(NCE,Book 4,L.12)
 它对于电影业来说并不是无法忍受的过重的负担。
 4. I didn't do too good a job today. (CGEL)

 D. how astonishing a sight!

 2. We now can see how serious a problem it is.

 第二,当名词短语中含有such或what时,不定冠词a(an)也不能放在最前端,而要放在such或what之后(强制性的):
 such(what) a (an) +形容词+名词
 A. such a delightful person
 1. I've never met such a delightful person.(PEU)
 我从来没有见到过这么可爱的人。
 2. Who could have advised you to do such a foolish thing? (Wilde)
 谁建议你做了这样愚蠢的事呢?
 3. It was such a beautiful day that we decided to go to the beach. (Heaton)

 B. What a beautiful picture!
 1. What a good heart you have! (Wilde)
 您有一颗多么好的心啊!
 2. What a strange London they saw! (Wilde)

 第三,当与quite和rather连用时,可以采用如下的语序:
 quite(rather) a(an)+形容词+名词,但不是强制性的,故亦可采用下列语序:a quite(rather)+形容词+名词(参见quite a)
 A. quite an interesting film
 1. You’ve been having quite a long chat with the doctor. (Bennet)
 你和医生聊了相当长的一段时间。
 2. He’s quite a good amateur actor. (UED)
 他是一个相当好的业余演员。
 3. This is a quite comfortable house. (Dreiser)
 这是一所相当舒适的房子。
 B. rather a sad story
 1. Caddie was really rather a silly creature. (Priestley)
 卡迪是一个相当蠢的家伙。
 2. I have rather a busy afternoon in front of me. (Du Maurier)
