1) 作为副词，虽然是最高级，但不用 the。

• The poor farmers who benefit least from the narcotics business are the target of the anti-drug campaign. (Newsweek, Jan. 9, 2006, p.34)那些从麻醉品行业中获利最少的贫苦种植者，却是反毒品斗争的目标。

2) 作为代词，the least 没有 the last... 的那种否定意义，反而是肯定“最低限度也…”。

• Providing that opportunity is the least the federal government can and should do for debt-burdened college students.提供那个机会，是联邦政府起码能够而且应该为债务沉重的大学生们做的一件事。
