不要 to)。 - You needn't come if you don't want to.
- She need never know.
- Need you be so rude?
- That needn't always be the case.
- Need one remind her (= US State Secretary Condolezza Rice) of the torture skills some (US) soldiers brazenly demonstrated in the past?
- I need to go to the post office.
- Do you need the hammer?
- Just what I needed!
- I need someone to look after the children.
- She didn't need telling twice.
- It's OK. You needn't pay for that phone call.
- I'm in no hurry. He needn't send it by air.
- You don't need to (*needn't) pay for emergency calls in most countries.
- I don't need to (*I needn't) queue for my bus. I get on at the terminus.
- We'll need to repair the roof next year.
- You'll need to fill out these forms before you see the immigration officer.
- You needn't have woken me up. I don't have to go to work today.
- I needn't have cooked so much food. Nobody was hungry.
- It started raining, so I didn't need to water the flowers.
但是后面马上接着可以说: - But I did water them in case it didn't rain enough.
- I didn't need to mow the lawn myself. My brother did it.
说了 needn't have + pp 之后,往往另加一句 could have + pp 作为一个替代办法。 - —I wanted a copy of the letter, so I typed it twice. —You needn't have typed it twice. You could have used a carbon.
- She shouldn't have stood in the queue. She should have got tickets from the machine.
- She needn't have stood in the queue. She could have got tickets from the machines.
- —She looks quite ill. I'm sure it's flu. —It needn't be —maybe she's just overtired.
- The machine needs oiling.机器需要上油了(不说 needs being oiled,但可以说 needs to be oiled)。
- Your hair needs cutting (needs to be cut).
- This word needs replacing by (*being replaced by) a better one.
