作为及物动词，主动语态的意思是“冒犯”、“得罪”、“触犯”。

• I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way.如有冒犯之处，务请包涵。

但是被动语态 to be offended 或 to get offended 往往不是真正意义上取决于外来因素的“被动”（“被冒犯”、“被触犯”），而是自己可以左右的一种情绪，即对别人的某个表示感到触犯了自己因而不高兴，见怪。因此，不要把 to be offended 或 to get offended 理解为客观发生的“被冒犯”。

• She was offended by not being invited to the film festival.她由于没有被邀请参加电影节而感到不快（不是：被冒犯了）。
• I apologize if anybody was offended by anything I said.我所说的，如果有哪一位感到不快，那就请多包涵。

由于这是一种自己可以左右的情绪，所以就可以有否定的祈使句（要不然，劝人家不要被触犯，就是荒谬的），而且这种祈使句往往是一句对方不中听的话的先导，然后再用 but 引入这句不中听的话（参见 sorry, but 条）。
