这个构词法,古已有之,于今为烈。莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》(Hamlet)第三幕第二场,已经有 it out-herods Herod 的说法(当时第一个 h 小写),指的是圣经上那个残暴的犹太国王希律(据《马太福音》二章十六节,耶稣降生时希律王曾下令屠杀伯利恒的一切婴孩);to out-Herod Herod 就是比希律王更希律王(即更残暴)。到了现代,用这个构词法,还可以自行以某个名词或动词为基础创造出许多新的动词。
