词组 | exhibit, exhibition |
释义 | exhibit, exhibition Bernstein 1965 and Shaw 1975 want to enforce a distinction between exhibit and exhibition, the gist of which is that exhibit should refer only to an item or group of items on display in an exhibition and not to the exhibition itself. The use of exhibit which these writers consider an error is in such a sentence as "Ten thousand people have so far attended the art exhibit." This use of exhibit is criticized by no other commentator, however, and is consistent with the general sense of the word, "something exhibited." It is also common: • ... on the final day of the August exhibit —Retailing Daily, 16 Aug. 1954 • ... taking their best work to the gallery for the art exhibit —Kay Haugaard, in Networks, ed. Marjorie Seddon Johnson et al., 1977 |
