词组 railroad, railway
释义 railroad, railway
There is no usage controversy involving railroad and railway, but several commentators have pointed out—and our evidence confirms— that railway is the word used in British English. The first of these examples is from a New Zealander:
... the railway waiting rooms came to be looked upon as dormitories —Frank Sargeson, Once Is Enough, 1973
... undermine subsidised railway systems —The Economist, 16 May 1986
Railroad and railway are both used in American English, and are essentially interchangeable. Railroad is considerably more common than railway in the U.S., except that railway is more likely to be used when the reference is to an actual set of tracks rather than a system of transportation:
An ornate little car on an incline railway glides between the parking lot and the top level of the restaurant —Paul Showers, N.Y. Times, 10 Apr. 1977
