词组 vie
释义 vie
Vie is typically used with the prepositions with and for: competitors vie with each other for something desired. Using against rather than with in such a context has been called a mistake, although similar verbs, such as compete and fight, may be followed by either preposition, and although the meaning of with in "vie with" is actually "against." In truth, the only good reason for not using against with vie is, simply, that almost no one does so, at least in print. Our files include only a single citation (from 1944) for vie against, compared with more than 50 for vie with. Here are a few examples of the common prepositions:
... we have lately been vying with the Russians in an ostrich-like and naīve absurdity —Edmund Wilson, A Piece of My Mind, 1956
Welsh literature vies with Irish in antiquity —Simeon Potter, Language in the Modern World, 1960
... hosts of other social and civilian programs are vying for the federal budget dollar —Forbes, 1 Dec. 1970
Diverse objects, both contemporary and antique, vie for attention —Monica Meenan, Town & Country, July 1980
