词组 no way
释义 no way
From the evidence at hand it appears that no way as an emphatic negative is an Americanism that cropped up in the late 1960s. Our earliest printed evidence is from 1968:
... I can't forget those first seventeen years, no way! —Arthur Ashe, quoted in N. Y. Amsterdam News, 7 Sept. 1968
Did this use originate in the speech of black Americans? Is it college slang? Or is it simply part of the argot of the 1960s youth movement, as Howard 1978 suggests? It is hard, given that the related adverb noway has been around since the 13th century, not to suspect that it is a good deal older. Christopher Ricks, in Michaels & Ricks 1980, says it has been around a very long time, but he gives us no evidence.
Howard 1978 and Harper 1975, 1985 are sure the expression is on the way out; Reader's Digest 1983 and Flesch 1983 are sure it is here to stay. Shaw 1975, 1987 merely thinks it is hackneyed. Our current evidence does not suggest that the phrase is losing popularity.
As Reader's Digest notes, no way occurs in several constructions. The first of these, the interjectional use, is the earliest and the most common:
So I ask myself... do I want to go out on location in some godforsaken corner of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and live in a motel for two months? No way —Robert Mitchum, quoted in N. Y. Times, 19 Sept. 1971
The answer is—no way —Ada Louise Huxtable, N.Y. Times, 23 June 1974
Liza was telling everybody there were no pictures in the nude, no way —David Taylor, Punch, 14 Aug. 1974
... when a friend asked him if he would do it again, Mr. [Jimmy] Carter looked back on his long quest and shook his head. "No, no way!" he said —James T. Wooten, N.Y. Times, 31 Oct. 1976
You remember the Bolivian Marching Powder and realize you're not down yet. No way, José —Jay Mclnerney, Bright Lights, Big City, 1984
No way also frequently occurs after there is (or was). This construction is very close to being a simple combination of no and way. When followed by for, the phrase seems entirely transparent:
... said there was no way for Truman to win —Victor Emanuel, Sr., Houston Post, 15 Sept. 1984
But the there is construction without the for is more common:
But after Nixon I say the hell with it, there's no way these kids should be punished and he gets away clean —John Sieler, quoted in N.Y. Times, 27 Oct. 1974
There's no way I could skate constantly for 20 minutes —Scott Hamilton, quoted in Houston Post, 4 Sept. 1984
There is no way you will be able to get everything in this article verified —Jay Mclnerney, Bright Lights, Big City, 1984
He was a turncoat, and there was no way we would support him —Tip O'Neill with William Novak, Man ofthe House, 1987
The there is can simply be omitted too:
No way you can put a ball over that scoreboard — John Candelaria, quoted in Sports Illustrated, 16 July 1979
No way the hottest name in Hollywood is supposed to act this uncool —Charles Leerhsen with Carl Robinson, Newsweek, 8 Dec. 1986
And, finally, the order of the verb and subject can be inverted after no way:
... and no way could Harvey explain a rack of lamb for two ... when he was supposed to be working late —Cyra McFadden, The Serial, 1977
No way did I want to meet Mrs. Gregg again — Claire Miller, Ranger Rick, September 1985
No way were we going to do all the housework — Anne Taylor Fleming, N.Y. Times Mag., 26 Oct. 1986
So far, no way seems to be limited to speech and prose of a personal or casual nature.
