(“如果”、“万一”)，也可以表示否定的目的(“以防”、“以免”)。请问上例中的in case是应当译为“如果”、“万一”呢，还是应当译为“以免”、“以防”呢?要知道，这两种译法是有本质区别的呀!

【答】 在大多数情况下，根据句意很容易断定in case究竟是表示“条件”(“如果”、“万一”)，还是表示否定的目的(“以防”、“以免”)。例如：

1.In case he comes，let me know.(《新英汉辞典》)

如果他来的话，告诉我一声。

2. Take warm clothes in case the weather is cold. (Palmer)

带些暖和的衣服，以防天气变冷。

3. In case I forget，please remind me about it. (ALD)

要是我忘记了，请提醒我。

4. Take an umbrella____it rains.

A. in any case B. in case

C. because D. for

5. He doesn’t dare (to)leave the house in case he should be recognized.(PEG)

他不敢出门，以免被人认出来。

但是，你提出来的那个句子却容许作两种不同的理解：

(a)万一发生火灾你就这么做。(Do this in the event of fire breaking out.)

(b)你要这么做，以免发生火灾。(Do this to prevent a fire breaking out.)(参见GCE，P.746)
