a pot of tea/a tea pot

We have a whole pot of tea. (TOEFL，87)

它的意思是否是“我们有一个完整的茶壶”?

【答】 首先应当记住，在a pot of tea，a cup of milk，a glass of water这样一些结构里，介词of之后的宾语是中心词，而a pot，a cup，a glass则是中心词的量词。所以a pot of tea是“一壶茶”，而不是“一个茶壶”。如果有形容词作定语的话(a hot cup of coffee)，则定语是修饰中心词的(a cup of hot coffee)或者修饰整个短语的(a whole pot of tea)，而不是修饰pot，cup，glass这些量词的(不是a hot cup，a whole pot)。所以，a whole pot of tea是指“满满的一壶茶水”或者“茶壶里的茶水装满了”(Our teapot's full. )。请看下面的实例：
