请问在English(英国人)之前为什么不加不定冠词an?

【答】 首先应当明确，上句中的English虽然可以译成“英国人”，但它并不是名词，而是形容词(充当表语)，意思是：“英国的”、“英格兰的”、“英国籍的”、“英语的”(belonging or relatingto England or to its people or language)。

形容词English与形容词Chinese (Japanese，American)不同。前者不能直接转换成名词，而后者却可以：a Chinese，a Japanese，an American。如果要表达个体的“英国人”这个意思，应当说an Englishman。你可能会问：不可以说an English，为什么可以说the English呢?这是因为一些表示民族的形容词可以用作名词短语的中心词：the English。但是，the English并不是表示个体的英国人，而是指作为一个民族的英国人(the people of England)，因此它的谓语动词必须用复数。只要把the English这一结构与the poor，the young，the old挂上钩，它的含义和用法就很容易理解了(the poor，the young，the old都是表示一类人，而不是表示作为个体的“穷人”、“年轻人”或“老年人”)。

英国人喜欢旅行。

与English具有相同用法的表示民族的的形容词有：French，Dutch，Irish，Welsh.这里应当补充指出，作“英语”解的English是名词，它照例不带冠词。
