■ business这个名词在现代英语中用得非常频繁，因而增添了许多新义，意义非常丰富、繁杂、多样，有时简直难以译成其他语言。大体上可以先从这个单词的词源来看。它本来是形容词 busy 派生出来的名词。顾名思义，它的原意就是“忙”、“办事”、“事情”、“事业”。凡是正式的（同“休闲”相对），如“办公”，甚至很抽象含糊的语言交际行为，也都可以列入 business 的范围。例如在谈及两个单词在日常语言中的使用频率时，就可以说： - Endorse seems to be putting indorse out of business altogether. Endorse这个词似乎正在把 indorse 完全从日常使用中排挤了出去。
笼统抽象的“事情”，也可以说是 business。 - Life is a hard business.人生处处不容易。
但是，在英美这样的商业社会，business 就自然同“企业”、“行业”，甚至更具体地同“商业”甚至一家家的“公司”联系了起来。往下我们试图归纳一下 business 几个方面的主要词义： 1) 笼统意义的工商业（包括生产与流通），相当于中文的“生意”。 - business people工商界人士。

- They have lost business to foreign competitors.他们的生意被外国竞争者抢去了。
2) 意义较为狭窄的商业买卖活动（只包括流通）。 - We do business with Japanese exporters.我们同日本出口商人做买卖。
- We deal fairly in business.我们买卖公平。
3) 任何行业（甚至工商业以外的行业）。 - He's in the travel business.他是经营旅游业的。
- She's in the fashion business.她是搞时装行业的。
- We're also in the insurance business.我们也经营保险业。
4) （企业）进行中的营业活动。 - The firm has been in business for over twenty years.该公司已经经营了二十多年。
- The factory is back in business again.该工厂现在又开工了。
- Taxis are plying for business at the airport.出租汽车在机场争生意。
- High rents have put many local traders out of business.由于租金太高，当地许多业者只好歇业。
5) （企业的）营业状况。 - Business is good.生意好。
- Business is slack.生意清淡。
6) （任何行业或事业的）运行。 - The government tried to give the appearance of business as usual.政府企图装出事情一切正常的样子。
7) 对公众营业或办公。 - The store/ bank opens for business at nine o'clock.商店／银行九点开门营业。
8) 与私事相对的公事。 - to mix business with pleasure.趁办公事的机会玩乐一下。
