律师及其他专业服务（包括银行业）的顾客称 client，但医生的称 patient。商店的顾客叫 customer, 图书馆的读者和剧院的观众以及餐饮业顾客叫 patron, 旅馆的住客叫 guest。比较特别的是：找政府机构办事的老百姓也可以叫做 client（或 customer）。
