| 释义 | father Use of father as an intransitive verb meaning "to act as a father in rearing a child" is a fairly recent development that has not been universally welcomed. Heritage 1982 reports that a majority of its usage panel disapproves father in this sense, perhaps because they feel that it has a jargonistic quality, or perhaps because they simply dislike its newness. It does not seem otherwise objectionable in our examples. In any case, our evidence indicates that this intransitive father is not especially common.
