词组 | overview |
释义 | overview This is another recently popular word. Shakespeare used it in Love's Labour's Lost (1595), but its now common use in the sense "a general survey" dates only from the 1920s: • Very few courses now give an over-view of any field —Jour, of Home Economics, October 1926 Overview first became popular in the field of education, but by the 1950s it had come into more widespread use. It now occurs commonly enough to attract occasional criticism as a vogue word (as in Harper 1975, 1985). Its most frequent use, according to our evidence, is in describing a written work: • ... includes a brief and interesting overview of the development of geological thinking —Barbara Blau Chamberlain, Smithsonian, January 1972 • It offers, however, a readable overview of American intervention —Peter Winn, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 9 May 1976 • This article is a bit heavy on metallurgy, but gives an excellent overview —Blair & Ketchum's Country Jour., April 1980 |
