【答】 in general在这里不是作全句的状语，而是作名词biology的定语，否则，physiology，biochemistry是不能与biology并列的，因为physiology和biochemistry都是biology的分科。实际上，in general用作定语的情况并不是很罕见的。例如：

1.The distinguishing feature of grammar is that it gives rules for the modification of wordsnot in reference to concrete words，but to words in general，not taken concretely...

语法的特点在于，它得出词的变化的规则，而这不是指具体的词，而是指没有任何具体性的一般的词……

2. Slowly it dawns on man in general that science is something of interest and concern notonly to its dedicated practitioners but to himself as well.
