【答】 in proportion to是科技英语里一个常用的短语，在这里的含义是“按照”、“按照……的比例”、“与……成比例地”。in proportion to their importance的意思是“与它们的重要性成正比”，而不是“就其重要性的比例而言”。下面举几个类似的例子：

1. The air becomes cooler in proportion to the height of the area.

随着地面高度的增加，空气逐渐变冷。

2. Knowledge，in any art or science，being always the fruit of observation，study，or prac-tice，gives. in proportion to its extent and usefulness，the possessor a just claim to respect.

在任何艺术和科学中，由于知识总是观察、研究或实践的成果，所以知识的所有者理应受到尊敬;所受尊敬的程度，则同其知识的广度和深度以及实用价值成正比。

3. A further inference was drawn by Pascal，who reasoned that if this ‘sea of air’ existed，its pressure at the bottom(i. e. sea-level) would be greater than its pressure further up，and that therefore the height of the mercury column would decrease in proportion to theheight above sea-level.
