【答】 当mathematics指作为一个科学分支的“数学”或者作为一个学科的“数学”时，被看作是单数：

1. Mathematics is a subject studied in nearly every school. (ELD)

数学是几乎每所学校都要学习的科目。

2. Mathematics includes arithmetic，algebra，geometry，and calculus.

数学包括算术、代数、几何和微积分。

但是，当mathematics指“数学能力”、“数学成绩”、“数学应用”、“计算能力”、“运算结果”时，则被看作是复数：

1. His mathematics are not good.

他的数学不好(他不善于计算)。

2. It comes to ￡50 if my mathematics are correct. (Wood)

如果我的计算正确的话，总共是50英镑。
