be known to/by
【问】He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto.(New Concept English,Book 3,L.14)
像He's known to everyone as a good actor.这样的句子里的is known to是很容易理解的,因为这里的is known to表达的是静态,而在我提问的句子里came to be known表达的是动态,为什么这里仍然用介词to,而不用介词by呢?
1. He's known to the police (as a criminal). (LDCE)
2. Mr Jones has been known to me for several years... (CIE)
虽然be known to是最常见的结构,但是也有人使用be known by结构,由by引出施动者:
1. I don’t think he’s known to(or by) anybody here.(Palmer)
2. That man is known by(or to) Jim. (Platt)
3. He lives alone,in poverty scarcely, known by his neighbours. (Maugham)
