为什么第一个名词短语带定冠词，而第二个却不带?

【答】 不可数的抽象名词(如happiness，science，theory，practice，progress，history，art，evo-lution，phylosophy，architecture，music)在指类别时是不加冠词的。按照英语惯用法，当这些名词受形容词修饰时，仍然不用加冠词，例如：

Anglo-Saxon architecture，Japanese history/European history，human evolution，16thcentury history，medieval art(中世纪艺术)

但是，当这些名词有后置定语时，则常常使用定冠词：

the architecture of Angro-Saxonthe history of Japan/Europethe evolution of manthe history of the 16th centurythe art of the Middle Ages
