【答】 当research泛泛地指“研究”时，是一个不可数名词，因此，不能与不定冠词连用，也不能用复数形式：

1. The old man had done first-class scientific research. (Snow)

这位老人进行了一流的科学研究。

2. The use of radium was discovered after much research. (JED)

经过大量研究之后才发现了镭的用途。

当research指对某个问题的具体研究时，则是个可数名词，可与不定冠词连用，也有复数形式：

1. They are carrying out a research into [for] the cause of cancer. (ALD)

他们正在进行对癌症病因的研究。

2. I tried to concentrate my attention upon my chemical researches. (Doyle)

我试图把注意力集中到我的化学研究上。

3. At the university he made researches in histology of the nervous system.

他在大学里进行过神经系统组织学的研究。
